Dans un grand contexte de doutes, les représentants béninois qui devraient rejoindre Abidjan mercredi 17 avril pour compétir à partir du vendredi ont finalement rejoint la capitale ivoirienne le vendredi. Conséquence immédiate, le Bénin n’a pu compétir pour le compte de cette première journée du vendredi. Les athlètes béninois ont finalement entamé leur compétition ce dernier jour samedi 20 avril 2024. Au bout des efforts, ces vaillants représentants béninois se réconfortent avec 15 médailles.
4 médailles en Or remportées par ; Romaine Godonou au lancer de javelot dans la catégorie U18 dames , Hakilou Mama championne au lancer de javelot U20 hommes, Agnès Lokonon au 5000 mètres U20 dames et Yannick Yato au 5000 mètres U20 hommes. Au bout de cette journée sensationnelle, Agnès Lokonon revient sur le secret de son succès : « Je suis contente pour l’équipe, parce qu’on a fait une seule journée , et nous avons pu décrocher 4 médailles en Or. Ce n’est pas amusant. Parce que cette année par exemple, je fais une classe d’examen et c’est un peu difficile pour moi je travaille presque tous les jours de la semaine » ; a-t-elle déclaré.
À la fin de ce challenge , on peut tout de même tirer de belles leçon selon Zépherin Hounkenou, Directeur technique de la Fédération béninoise d’athlétisme; « malheureusement nous avons compéti en une seule journée, sur une compétition qui dure deux (02) journées, il y a plusieurs épreuves que nous n’avons pas fait , mais ce n’est pas encore une déception en soi , c’est vrai il y a un petit regret, qui est suffisamment effacé par notre satisfaction à travers les médailles que nous avons remportés et à travers le comportement de nos athlètes sur le terrain » ; a-t-il laissé entendre. Rappelons que cette compétition a réuni la Côte-d’Ivoire, le Ghana, le Burkina Faso et le Bénin. La troisième édition est prévue pour l’année prochaine.
